Northland Power has announced the successful completion of the Jurassic Battery Energy Storage System, which is now the largest battery energy storage facility in Alberta. The facility has the capability to deliver 80 MW of power and store up to 160 MWh of energy, aimed at enhancing grid stability and balancing capacity in the region.
This project has been delivered ahead of schedule and under budget, a notable achievement, especially given the complexities often involved in large-scale energy projects. Throughout the development process, Northland reported zero lost-time incidents, reflecting a commitment to safety in construction and operations.
In addition to its operational capabilities, the Jurassic Battery Energy Storage System is supported by a 15-year offtake agreement which secures a market for 100% of its capacity. This long-term agreement will provide predictable revenue flows, contributing to the overall sustainability of the facility.
The establishment of this storage facility is part of broader efforts to enhance energy infrastructure across Alberta, which could play a vital role in the province's transition towards a more resilient and renewable energy grid. This initiative aligns with the growing interest in energy storage technologies aimed at supporting renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy, which can be variable in nature.
