VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has granted final approval for an $850-million terminal expansion project at Roberts Bank, marking one of the largest commercial maritime infrastructure investments on the Pacific Coast.
The expansion will add a new three-berth marine container terminal, increasing the port's total container handling capacity by 35 per cent upon completion in 2028. Port authorities noted that the added throughput is critical to preventing supply chain bottlenecks for Canadian agricultural, forestry, and manufactured exports destined for Asian markets.
Environmental mitigation plans integrated into the approval mandate strict acoustic monitoring for marine mammals, habitat offset creation for shorebirds, and electrification of terminal cranes to minimize local carbon emissions.
"This expansion secures Canada's trade corridor to Asia-Pacific markets while creating thousands of construction and logistics jobs across British Columbia," port leadership confirmed during the project announcement.
