A recent analysis conducted by Imperial College London’s World Weather Attribution (WWA) has determined that human-induced climate change has significantly increased the likelihood of wildfires in Canada, particularly in the Northwest Territories and Ontario. This study reports that the frequency of such wildfires may be roughly twice as high due to climate change. In a broader context, more than 3.8 million hectares of land have burned across Canada in the year to date, with over 730,000 hectares of that area located in Ontario alone.
The analysis outlines that the intensity and frequency of these wildfires present mounting challenges in terms of management and prevention strategies. The findings have raised alarms among scientists and environmental advocates, who call for immediate changes in global energy consumption patterns, specifically emphasizing the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
