On September 30, 2026, NGen, Canada’s Global Innovation Cluster for Advanced Manufacturing, celebrated the grand opening of Nunavut's first factory dedicated to advanced manufacturing. Located in Arviat, the facility is a collaborative effort involving Sakku Investments Corporation and Sakku Innovative Building Solutions (SIBS). This initiative aims to enhance Inuit-led innovation and support workforce development through the production of modular housing solutions tailored for the unique needs of the North.
The opening of this factory is positioned as a crucial advancement in addressing the ongoing housing challenges faced in Nunavut. By focusing on modular housing, the factory seeks to leverage advanced manufacturing techniques to create more efficient and faster construction methods, which is particularly important given Nunavut's geographical and logistical constraints. Local communities will benefit from training and employment opportunities generated by the factory’s operations, further fostering economic growth in the region.
The project comes as part of a broader strategy to increase investment in northern infrastructure and promote sustainable development. Stakeholders highlight the importance of self-sufficiency and local solutions in tackling housing shortages and are optimistic about the positive impacts this factory will have on the community as a whole.
